What Is a Loan (EMI) Calculator?

A loan calculator (also called an EMI calculator) computes the monthly installment, total interest paid, and total repayment amount for any loan — home loans, car loans, personal loans, or education loans. Understanding the full cost of a loan before taking it is essential for responsible borrowing.

EMI Formula

EMI = P × r × (1 + r)^n / [(1 + r)^n - 1], where P is the principal, r is the monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100), and n is the tenure in months. The EMI stays constant throughout the loan term; the proportion of principal vs. interest changes each month (amortization).

Key Insights the Calculator Reveals

True Cost of Borrowing

A ₹50 lakh home loan at 8.5% for 20 years has an EMI of ₹43,391. But the total repayment is ₹1.04 crore — you pay ₹54 lakhs in interest on top of the principal. Knowing this upfront helps compare loan offers and motivates early prepayment.

Impact of Tenure

Shorter tenure means higher EMI but much lower total interest. Longer tenure means manageable EMI but significantly higher total cost. Use the calculator to find your optimal balance.

Rate Sensitivity

A 0.5% rate increase on a ₹30 lakh loan over 15 years adds ~₹5 lakhs to total repayment. Compare loan offers carefully — even small rate differences matter significantly.
