When to Convert JPG to PNG
JPG is the default format for photographs. PNG is the default for graphics requiring lossless quality and transparency support. Converting JPG to PNG makes sense when you need an image to serve as a source for further editing — where re-saving as JPG multiple times would progressively degrade quality through generation loss. PNG's lossless encoding stops that degradation in its tracks.
It also matters for images you plan to overlay on different backgrounds, embed in presentations with transparent areas, or use as layers in graphic design software. Even though the conversion doesn't restore quality already lost in the original JPG, it preserves whatever quality is there without further loss through subsequent edits and re-saves.
How It Works and What to Expect
The converter renders your JPG onto an HTML canvas and encodes the result as a lossless PNG. The output will be larger in file size than the JPG source — that's expected. PNG must store every pixel value exactly, making it inherently larger for photographic content. The trade-off is: no further quality loss from re-saving, and full PNG feature support (transparency, richer metadata, lossless editing capability).
Converting JPG to PNG does not restore quality lost when the original JPG was created. If the JPG was heavily compressed, the output PNG will faithfully represent the compressed image — cleanly preserved from that point forward, but not improved.
All conversion runs locally in your browser. Files are never transmitted externally. The tool works on desktop and mobile browsers, is completely free, and requires no account. If you later need to convert back to JPG or to a modern format, use the PNG to JPG or PNG to WebP converters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?
No. Converting a JPG to PNG preserves the image at its current quality without any further degradation. It does not restore detail lost when the JPG was originally created. Think of it as locking current quality for future edits rather than recovering lost quality.
Will the PNG be larger than the JPG?
Yes. PNG uses lossless compression which stores all pixel data precisely. For photographic content, PNGs are typically 3–10× larger than equivalent JPGs. This is normal and expected.
Will the transparent background become available after conversion?
No. JPG files don't contain transparency data. Converting to PNG doesn't add transparency — it simply re-encodes the same image in the PNG container. To use PNG's transparency features, you'd need to manually remove the background in a photo editor after conversion.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. All conversion happens in your browser. Your images are never transmitted externally. Processing happens in your browser — no account required.
Does this work on mobile?
Yes. The tool runs in Chrome on Android and Safari on iOS. Select images from your camera roll and download the converted PNGs within the mobile browser.
Is there a cost or sign-up required?
No. The JPG to PNG converter is completely free with no account required and no limits on conversion volume.
