Understanding PNG and JPG — Key Differences
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless image format designed for graphics that need to preserve every pixel exactly — screenshots, logos, illustrations, and images with text or sharp edges. PNG supports transparency (alpha channel), making it the format of choice for images that need to sit on different background colors.
JPG (JPEG) is a lossy format optimized for photographs. It achieves significantly smaller file sizes than PNG by selectively discarding fine detail that most viewers don't consciously perceive. JPG does not support transparency. For photographic images, a JPG is often 5–10× smaller than the equivalent PNG with no visible quality difference.
Converting PNG to JPG makes sense when you have a PNG photograph, scanned page, or realistic illustration that doesn't require transparency — and you need a smaller file for sharing, emailing, uploading to a website, or storing efficiently on a device.
Why Convert PNG to JPG?
PNG files of photographic content are unnecessarily large. A 5 MB PNG of a landscape photograph might be 500 KB as a JPG — a 90% reduction with no visible quality loss at normal viewing sizes. When you need to email images, upload product photos to an e-commerce store, or share photographs on social media, PNG creates friction that JPG eliminates.
Many platforms that accept image uploads have file size limits. Stock photo sites, social media platforms, profile picture uploaders, and email servers all enforce limits where a PNG frequently exceeds what a JPG would not. Converting avoids the rejection without having to reduce image resolution.
How the PNG to JPG Converter Works
- Upload your PNG files. Select one or multiple PNG images through the dropzone.
- Local conversion. The tool renders each PNG onto a browser canvas and encodes the result as JPEG at high quality, applying the canvas's native encoding engine.
- Transparency handling. Since JPG doesn't support transparency, any transparent areas in the PNG are filled with a solid white background before encoding.
- Download your JPGs. Converted images are available immediately for individual download.
For complementary size reduction, combine this converter with the Image Compressor to reduce the JPG output further. Or skip JPG entirely and convert to WebP or AVIF for modern web use with even better compression ratios.
Privacy and Platform Details
All conversion runs in your browser using the native Canvas API. Your PNG files are never uploaded to any server. This tool functions on any modern browser across Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. No account or payment is required.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens to transparent areas when converting PNG to JPG?
JPG does not support transparency. Any transparent regions in your PNG will be filled with a solid white background in the output JPG. If you need transparency preserved, use the PNG to WebP converter instead, as WebP supports alpha transparency.
Will picture quality decrease after conversion?
JPN is a lossy format, so some very fine detail is discarded during encoding. For photographic content at high quality settings, the difference is not visible to the naked eye. For images with sharp edges, text, or solid colors (logos, icons, diagrams), quality loss is more visible — PNG or WebP is a better format for those use cases.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Conversion uses the browser's local Canvas API. Your images are processed in browser memory and never transmitted externally.
Can I convert multiple PNGs at once?
Yes. Upload a batch of PNG files and they are all converted in one session.
Does this work on mobile?
Yes. The converter runs in Chrome on Android and Safari on iOS. You can convert images from your phone's storage directly in the mobile browser.
Is this tool free?
Completely free. No account required and no limits on how many images you convert.
