What Is the Pomodoro Technique?

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It breaks work into focused 25-minute intervals (called "pomodoros") separated by 5-minute breaks. After every four pomodoros, you take a longer 15–30 minute break. The technique is backed by research in attention management and cognitive science — focused sprints prevent mental fatigue while regular breaks maintain sustained concentration across a full workday.

Why It Works

  • Time pressure improves focus. Knowing you only have 25 minutes makes it easier to resist distractions — social media, email, messages — because the commitment is brief.
  • Breaks prevent burnout. The mandatory 5-minute break forces recovery, preventing the mental fog that accumulates during marathon work sessions.
  • Gamification of work. Completing pomodoros creates a sense of accomplishment and progress, which motivates continuation.
  • Accurate time estimation. After using the technique for a week, you naturally learn how many pomodoros different types of tasks require — improving planning accuracy.

How to Use Edita's Pomodoro Timer

  1. Choose your task. Write down what you'll work on in this pomodoro.
  2. Start the 25-minute timer. Work on only that task until the timer sounds.
  3. Take a 5-minute break. Step away from the screen.
  4. After 4 pomodoros, take a 15–30 minute long break.
  5. Repeat. Most knowledge workers complete 8–12 pomodoros per effective workday.
