What Is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value calculated from a person's weight and height, used as a screening tool to categorize weight status. Formula: BMI = weight (kg) / height² (m²). It's the most widely used initial assessment of healthy weight range by healthcare providers globally.

BMI Categories (WHO Standard)

  • Below 18.5: Underweight
  • 18.5 – 24.9: Normal weight
  • 25.0 – 29.9: Overweight
  • 30.0 – 34.9: Obesity Class I
  • 35.0 – 39.9: Obesity Class II
  • 40.0 and above: Obesity Class III (Severe)

For South Asians, research suggests health risks begin at lower BMI values — some guidelines use 23.0 as the overweight threshold for people of Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi heritage.

BMI Limitations

BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic one. It doesn't account for muscle mass (athletes may have high BMI without excess fat), bone density, age-related changes in body composition, or fat distribution (where fat is stored matters as much as how much). Use BMI as one data point alongside waist circumference, body fat percentage, and medical advice.
