What Is a Logarithm?

A logarithm answers the question: "To what exponent must I raise the base to get this number?" If 10³ = 1000, then log₁₀(1000) = 3. Logarithms compress large ranges of values (like earthquake magnitudes, sound intensity in decibels, or pH levels) into manageable scales, making them indispensable in science, engineering, and data analysis.

Logarithm Bases

  • log₁₀ (Common logarithm): Base 10. Used in chemistry (pH), acoustics (decibels), and earthquake measurement (Richter scale).
  • ln (Natural logarithm): Base e ≈ 2.718. Used in calculus, compound interest, population growth, and information theory.
  • log₂ (Binary logarithm): Base 2. Used in computer science, information theory, and algorithm complexity (Big O notation).
  • Arbitrary base: log_b(x) = log(x) / log(b) via change-of-base formula.

Change of Base Formula

Most calculators only compute log₁₀ and ln. The change-of-base formula converts: log_b(x) = ln(x) / ln(b) = log₁₀(x) / log₁₀(b). Edita's logarithm calculator handles any base automatically.
