What Are GCD and LCM?
The Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) — also called Greatest Common Factor (GCF) or Highest Common Factor (HCF) — is the largest positive integer that divides two or more numbers without remainder. GCD(48, 36) = 12.
The Least Common Multiple (LCM) is the smallest positive integer that is divisible by all given numbers. LCM(4, 6) = 12 — the smallest number that both 4 and 6 divide evenly into.
Relationship Between GCD and LCM
For two numbers a and b: GCD(a,b) × LCM(a,b) = a × b. This relationship allows computing LCM efficiently from GCD: LCM = (a × b) / GCD(a,b).
Practical Applications
Simplifying Fractions
Divide both numerator and denominator by their GCD to reduce a fraction to lowest terms. GCD(24, 36) = 12, so 24/36 simplifies to 2/3.
Adding Fractions
To add fractions with different denominators, find the LCM of the denominators to get the least common denominator (LCD). 1/4 + 1/6 uses LCM(4,6)=12, giving 3/12 + 2/12 = 5/12.
Scheduling Problems
If event A repeats every 4 days and event B every 6 days, they next coincide after LCM(4,6) = 12 days.
