What Is EXIF Data?

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is metadata embedded inside JPEG and other image files by the camera or device that captured them. It records a rich set of technical and contextual details: GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken, the camera model and lens, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length, timestamp, and even whether the flash fired.

This metadata is invisible to the naked eye but travels with every photo you share online. That means when you post a photo taken at home, in many cases you're unknowingly sharing your precise home address in the GPS coordinates embedded in the file.
